Computer Hardware

Computer hardware is the functional, material objects, that contain the pieces and parts needed to allow a computer to function. The hardware is the computers body, while the operating system and software could be considered the computer’s mind. Unlike a body however, this hardware can be easily swapped out and upgraded for a completely customized system.

Computer hardware includes the processor, random access memory, or simply RAM, hard drive, cooling system and all the connecting wires. Typically it will be housed in either a non-descript rectangular box or housed in a sleek laptop. Both have distinct advantages and disadvantages which are discussed above and below.

Laptop computer hardware is almost impossible to upgrade due to the proximity of the parts and the customized container and set-up. There is often a PCI slot where expansions can occur and peripherals can always be added to USB and other ports. A desktop has the distinct advantage of being able to upgrade very easily, even at home.
